Green Materials

An intrinsic part of sustainable construction is the use of green materials. The primary selection is using materials derived from renewable resources, and materials which can be effectively recycled for reuse.

When it comes to lumber, green lumber certified by the U.S. Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is the preferred choice. Green lumber is harvested from sustainably managed forests where trees are selectively chosen for felling causing the least impact to the area’s flora, fauna and biodiversity.

Other materials used are those which improve the building efficiency like a variety of plastics for insulation. While plastic is technically not a ‘green’ material it generally consumes less energy to produce than many other insulation materials.

Sustainable construction encourages the use of locally available materials which save money; reduce energy for transportation and minimizes pollution.
